Cardinal Mooney Catholic Servant Leadership Project:

Community service as an expression of the works of mercy and the beatitudes is an integral hallmark of a Catholic education. In accordance with its mission as a Catholic school, Cardinal Mooney is instituting a community service project. For the
2016-2017 school year, this project will be required of the freshman and sophomore classes only.

“Enter to learn, leave to serve.”
--Cardinal Mooney Catholic Motto

As a learning community, Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School seeks to prepare students for a life of service through their educational experiences. This mission is taught and modeled through the service that students and faculty provide to their communities throughout the year.

The goal of the program is to build up the next generation of servant leaders who are empowered to live out the command of Jesus to “love one another, as I have loved you.” (John 13:34) We take as our own the vision of St. John that “God is love” (1 John 4:8) and believe that in serving people in need out of love, we are sharing God and his love with the world.

In order to enter into a life of service, students at Cardinal Mooney Catholic are required to engage in a rigorous service learning program while a member of the school community. In their freshman and sophomore years, students have the opportunity to serve the various communities of which they are a member, to reflect on their service and to seek a fit between their skills and community needs. During their junior and senior years, students will take on the further challenge of servant leadership, developing and carrying out a service project of their choosing. Students will create an output which will reflect both what they have accomplished through their service and how they have grown as a leader.

While each year of the program requires documentation for a minimum number of service hours, students are encouraged to document all service that they complete. Students who demonstrate exceptional participation and leadership through the service project will be recognized through the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

Community service is an integral part of a Catholic education.  Community service at Cardinal Mooney includes the following elements:

  1. Service Leadership Project
  2. Class service days and reflection
  3. Liturgical Ministries for school masses
  4. Service performed by National Honor Society, Student Council, SADD and other student groups
  5. End of the year recognition of student service through Cardinal Mooney Service Awards and the President's Volunteer Service Award.
